Charles Murphy,
bassist/vocalist, has been playing music all his life.
He started with piano and saxophone, but found his niche as a bass player
when he was 15. Shortly thereafter
he began to travel with touring bands all over the United States.
His 30-plus years of experience have gained him slots with such artists
as Johnny Winter. Charles has
extensive knowledge of his instrument and plays every style of bass, from that
funky sound to the old “acoustic” style of the 20s and 30s. He is particularly enjoyable on his fretless P-bass and adds
an authentic and solid bottom to the sounds of the Sugar Daddies and Sweet Mama
Cotton.
Drummer Osama Raad started his professional career at a very
early age. While still in high
school, he began playing in bands both in Lebanon (his home country) and in
Kuwait, where he attended school. Since
moving to the United States in 1981, Osama has become proficient in many styles
of music, including Middle Eastern music, top 40 and show music, and
contemporary jazz. Introduced to
the blues by his good friend and a prominent Houston blues dj, Nuri Nuri, Osama
became involved in the Houston blues scene.
He has played with many noteworthy blues and jazz legends in the Houston
area including Sonny Boy Terry, Yvonne Washington, Lala Wilson, Milton Hopkins,
Pearl Murray. He has also backed up
international legends such as Johnny Johnson and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown.
There is one empty slot in the Sugar Daddies' band right
now. We are all still grieving the loss of our great friend and guitar
player, Joey Bowers, who passed away November 4, 2003. At this time
we are relying on our good friends to fill this position on a rotating
basis. Look for great guitar players such as Bill Allison and John
Carney to fill out the band in the near future.
