"Sweet Mama Cotton:
Soothing Blues That Will Touch Your Soul!"
---DJ Big Daddy J, host of the
Redeye Special, KPFT
“(we) have anxiously awaited the
release of their CD. It was well
worth the wait.”
---Dave Miller, reporter and
reviewer for North of the Border
“When it comes to blues piano,
Sweet Mama Cotton always pushes our buttons!”
--DJs Mr. And Mrs. V, hosts of
Blues on the Move, KPFT
“Marcy
is a piano player extraordinaire with a fine voice. Joey (Bowers), a
remarkably talented guitarist, compliments her perfectly. When I caught them
recently, I dug Marcy’s up-tempo blues/rock original, "Expect
Delays" from her CD of the same name. Then I laughed my way through
"Saturday Night in Reynosa" from her hilarious Live At The
Hollywood!… But my favorite was
her new original, "Here Alone", a beautiful love song slated for her
new cd…”
---Jim
Shortt, reporter for the Bay Runner magazine
Sweet Mama
Cotton was recently voted number two female piano player of the blues, along
with Honey Piazza, by audience members at KPFT.
“What an electric night we all
witnessed! You [Sweet Mama Cotton] were
on top of your craft…I personally was swooning over your rendition of “Is
You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby”. You
displayed the mastery you have on that piano and I just loved it.”
---A.J. Murphy, Montgomery County
Friends of the Blues
“The highlight of the evening was
the performance of Houston based songwriter, trained classical pianist, and
blues singer-songwriter Sweet Mama Cotton.
Her strong and very rich voice, in combination with an excellent
performance at the keyboard, made her presentation something you would not
have wanted to miss. As if coming from another era, her music reminds the
listener of smoky bar music combined with 1920’s blues.”

Sweet
Mama Cotton warms even the Scroogiest holiday heart with her right on, royally
pitched bluesy vocals, and her unparalleled, versatile piano talent. Delivered en
high from the second floor of the River Oaks Kroger Cafe on West Gray straight
to you, Sweet Mama Cotton's noontime weekend one woman concert offers an
irresistible combination of Christmas favorites, well established blues as well
as her own original arrangements. Born as Marcy Rae, she is thoroughly well
appreciated in her own right within the
Houston
music scene, and, as having performed many venues with blues legends
including
Texas
Johnny Brown and Lavelle White. She has classical training in piano, and
unfailing vocal depth and strength. Refusing to be pigeonholed, her diverse
musical repertoire has deep roots reaching to boogie woogie, country blues,
ragtime, and even a touch of Zydeco genres. Included in her mix of Christmas
favorites we heard a frolicking "Jingle Bells," "Feliz Navidad"
fluently delivered in Spanish, and quite possibly the sexiest version of
"Santa Babe" ever crooned. What's more, Sweet Mama wins the hearts of
boomer age fans in her audience with a spry rendition of "Age Don't mean a
Thing." Adding to her splendid artistry, is her ability to build humorous,
folksy intros into her favorite pieces such as "Expect Delays" and
"Is You Or Is You Ain't My Baby." With Sweet Mama Cotton, you'll feel
like you've all been talking together for years, and, you'll know for sure
you've witnessed an exceptional musical talent...Diane Manuel, Sugarland Blues
Aficionado.
